Depression Counseling
Depression Counseling
Depression counseling helps those who suffer from a number of conditions that are thought to be influenced by genetics and may be caused by an imbalance of chemicals in the body and brain. When balanced correctly, these chemicals help to control and moderate mood. However, this type of condition can also be triggered by stressful events such as a loss (death, breakup, divorce) and by abuse or illness.
There are many different categories of depression such as major depression, dysthymic disorder, seasonal affective disorder (SAD), bipolar disorder, teen depression and others.
Major Depressive Disorder
Major Depressive Disorder is more popularly know as Major Depression and is identified by the fact that it is disabling and prevents a person from functioning normally. It prevents a person from being able to work, sleep, study, eat, or enjoy life.
Dysthymic Disorder
Dysthymic Disorder (dysthymia) is long term depression that is less severe but can prevent normal functioning.
Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)
Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a condition many people experience in the winter months, when exposure to sunlight is reduced.
Bipolar Disorder
Bipolar Disorder is a condition where there are extreme mood swings. Once called manic depression, it is thought to be triggered by a chemical imbalance in the brain. It is identified by the cycling mood swings from extreme highs (mania) to extreme lows (depression).
Bipolar Disorder can be managed with medication and the Diebold Behavioral Counseling team includes a consulting psychiatrist who has years of personal experience with the medications used for this condition. Treatment options have been in use and on the market for used successfully for over 30 years and are well understood.
Teen Depression
During adolescence the body goes through a lot of changes. Teens have a hard time and when faced with other challenges in the home, in school or from social groupings and depression may become an issue.
Depression Counseling
Depression can also be anger turned inward, so it is important to learn to process these feelings with various techniques, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT).
There are other venting processes that can help with desensitization to traumatic experiences such as physical, emotional and sexual abuse.
